KØPENHAVN - Part 3: One More Time!

April 30th

I slept well in Sweden and after breakfast I rode with Szilvia back to Malmö, where she had some things to do, and then from there I took the train across the strait to Copenhagen.

Once back in Denmark, I picked up a couple of fresh Danishes and brought them back to Elder & Sister Jepson's apartment. They hadn't left yet and so I was able to share my Danishes and tell about my time in Sweden.

It was a beautiful morning with clear blue skies. My plan that day was simply to wander the city a bit more, take pictures, and see a few things I hadn't seen yet; all at a leisurely pace (so in other words, not my "Disneyland Pace.")

The first place I went was the City Hall (pictured above) where, as I understood it, you could go up to the top of the tower for a view.

When I got to the City Hall I discovered that they only let a group of people to the top of the tower once a day, at 12 noon. Heartbroken I looked down at my watch.... it was 11:54! I was in luck. So I waited six minutes enjoying the bustling city from the steps of the City Hall...

And then the guide led us through the City Hall...

...and eventually to the top of the tower where we had a commanding view of the city all around.

Yep...

The Tivoli Gardens amusement park where I had been two days before...

On the right you can see the Christiansborg where the Danish parliament sits...

"On the rooftops of Copenhagen, coo! wha' a sight..." -Bert

The Round Tower where I had also been two days before...

After spending time atop, I exited onto the inner courtyard for a view...

Outside the City Hall I noticed an interesting relief above one of the doors...

Of course Denmark is well-known for being highly socialized, where the government really is a bit like a mother hen taking care of all the needs of its chick-like citizens. Actually, I'm not really knocking socialism the way it is practiced here in Denmark. There are some compelling arguments that it works fairly well for this relatively small, homogeneous nation. But it simply won't do to compare the US government to that of a European country like this and then say that similar social policies should exist in the US. With such a massive undertaking, with so much at stake, the mother hen would then become a fat goose of inevitable bloated bureaucracy, corruption, unaccountability, and ineptitude. Better that the chicks depend on the hen as little as possible and are given the tools and freedoms (including financial freedom) to make of their life and community what they think is best. Because usually the chick knows better than hen.

RIPLEY'S BELIEVE-IT-OR-NOT!!

I didn't believe, so I left.

I took another stroll through the King's Garden to find many park goers enjoying the afternoon...

...the Rosenborg Palace...

Here I got my rock from Denmark...

The soldiers were out marching and drilling...

Woops...

I found a really cool setting on my camera where I can turn the "time dial" to a specific date and then when I take a picture it shows me what was happening in that exact spot at that exact moment in time. Here below I set the time dial to 1989 and look...

Young mothers in the park (time setting: 2009 again)...

Then I went back to the Amalienborg Palace for a view...

And the Nyhavn area...

One of the main squares with an equestrian statute and the French Embassy behind him (to the right)...

The façade of the Copenhagen stock exchange...

I wandered across the harbor to where the more residential canal apartments were...

Here is the every-funky Church Of Our Saviour...

Celestial? Terrestrial? or Telestial?

I found a nice bench in the shade on the harbor, took my shoes and socks off (my feet were getting tired), and had a little power nap...

This puppeh has swabed his last deck...

Unfortunately the Christiansborg was wrapped in paper towels and it was impossible for me to get any useful picture of it. It's one of the prettiest buildings in Copenhagen too!

There was a nice rainbow in the fountain...

...but this seemingly innocent little rainbow is clearly the signs of a wide-spread, sinister conspiracy...

When life hands you a pretty building wrapped in paper towels... make lemonade...

A Danish boat...

I needed to pee...

...so I went in the national library (the old rear wing pictured above)...

Passing the statue of Denmark's famous 20th century philosopher Søren Kirkegaard...

I relieved myself for free in the library and had a look around. It's built right on the harbor...

I left the library and the island upon which it sat...

...it was late afternoon and I was getting tired, but enjoyed a leisurely walk back through the city...

I even stopped at a 7-11 and got a slurpee to enjoy.

I went to Naboo...

The Sri Lankans were protesting there too...

I went back to the apartment and rested briefly before going back to the City Hall Square for some final evening shots.

And that was the end of my final day in Copenhagen. The next day was ACTION-PACKED... so stay tuned...
